Why I Chose Optometry

My decision to become an Optometrist came about differently than how most people decide on a career.  Instead of thinking, "I want to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer"...I sat down and worked backwards.  I made a list of what I wanted from a career.

I had had summer jobs (Such as the Jungle Cruise at Disney.  I knew I liked working with people).

Family was important to me (I wanted to be around for them. I wanted to travel for fun, but not for work).

I like sports. (At the time, nutrition, bite guards and Nautilus machines were the big rave...promising to increase athletic performance.  Eyes however, were being overlooked).

I liked being my own boss.  (no comment)

I had an interest in photography.  (optics)

So then I took a look at the careers that would give me all those things.  It came down to a Surgeon, Veterinarian, Dentist or an Optometrist.

I worked for a Veterinarian, roomed with a dental student and married a nurse...who said no to my being a surgeon.  In the end, I became an Optometrist.  One of the best decisions I have ever made.  I have been happy ever since.  Optometry has been a great career that offers a win-win situation for my patients and for myself.  I get to make a positive difference in people's lives every day.
